Job Description

Temporary Relief Community Support Worker 

North Algoma

Part-time position

Rate of Pay: $28.12/hour



As a Community Support Worker, at CLA, you can expect to:


Pursue and establish integrated community-based supports, partnerships and connections based on the goals and aspirations of people you are supporting. You will be responsive by providing opportunities that include but are not limited to cultural, social, spiritual, leisure and recreational. Responsible for implementing, developing, maintaining, and monitoring people’s outcomes. You are required to maintain accurate and up to date information in AIMS, and other various reporting procedures as directed by Manager.

  • Be able to work with people we support, their families, friends, other staff and community partners

  • Be comfortable in interacting with community partners

  • Be patient

  • Flexible: example- with the schedule, if someone changes their mind that day, being able to go with the flow in what they want to do; another example is with transportation- picking up vehicles at other locations

  • Creative thinking to explore volunteer opportunities

  • Be able to balance many different schedules

  • Planning and working on community goals with people supported

  • Ability to match a person’s interests with resources, activities and events available in the community

  • Energetic

  • Confidence to advocate for a person’s choices


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Promotes and demonstrates the Vision, Goal and Priority Statements and Mission Statement of the Association within the workplace and in the community.

  • Is aware of and abides by relevant government legislation, Algoma Health Unit, policies, procedures and practices of Community Living Algoma.

  • Facilitates the development of support networks for each person and promotes the involvement of family, friends and community members in the person’s life.

  • Support people to develop decision making skills and exercise choice.

  • Ensures an understanding of the status of priority outcomes of each person supported.

  • Ability to maintain and support new and existing community connections and partnerships (Culture, Music, Theater, Volunteer Placements).

  • Supports and encourages peers by providing positive feedback, contributes to and supports team decisions, attends team meetings and accepts constructive feedback.

  • Implements and complies with safe work practices and procedures in compliance with the OHSA, Developmental Services Act, food handling as per Algoma Health Unit and CLA policies and procedures. (this includes, but is not limited to, ensuring of clear exits, snow shoveling, housecleaning, cooking, etc.)

  • Reports all unsafe conditions and hazards, practices, accidents and incidents as outlined in agency health and safety policies.

  • Ensures and respects the integrity of confidential information for every person that is supported and employed by Community Living Algoma.

  • Provides personal care as required by the person receiving support. (this can include, but not limited to, lifting, transferring, repositioning and personal hygiene in a respectful and personalized fashion)

  • Facilitates and/or accompanies people supported to medical, dental and other professional appointments as required. Reports and records all required information, when required.

  • Identifies opportunities to improve support and services to the people we support.

  • Interacts with people supported in a respectful and positive manner including respecting their privacy and dignity.

  • Identifies and attends required training and meetings to enhance personal development.

  • Demonstrates punctuality and regular attendance.

  • Performs all other job related duties as assigned. 

Required Skills & Role
  • Diploma in Human Services with two years direct support experience in a community-based setting, or the equivalent combination of relevant education and experience

  • Sound knowledge of relevant legislation, Association philosophy, policies, procedures and positive approaches

  • Proven excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Valid standard first aid certificate (St. John Ambulance, Canada or Canadian Red Cross)

  • French is not required, but would be considered an asset.

  • A valid G driver’s license and maintenance of an acceptable driving record is required.

  • Vehicle Required.
