Don't Wing It: Prepare for Your Job Interview

Getting invited to an interview means you've already made a great first impression with your resume. Now it's time to show the employer why you're the right person for the job.

One of the biggest mistakes job seekers make is walking into an interview without preparing. Whether your interview is in person, over Zoom or Microsoft Teams, or with an AI-powered interview platform, preparation is essential.

Interviews Have Changed

Not every interview is face-to-face anymore. Many employers now use virtual interviews or AI interview software as part of the hiring process. If you aren't prepared for these formats, you could miss an opportunity before ever speaking to a hiring manager.

Before the Interview

Take time to prepare by:

  • Researching the company and learning about what they do.

  • Reading the job posting again to understand what the employer is looking for.

  • Reviewing your resume so you can confidently discuss your experience.

  • Practicing answers to common interview questions.

  • Planning your outfit and dressing professionally, even for virtual interviews.

  • Knowing the interview time and testing your internet connection, camera, microphone, and speakers ahead of time.

  • Finding a quiet, well-lit space free from distractions.

  • Logging in 10–15 minutes early.

Preparing for Zoom or Microsoft Teams Interviews

Virtual interviews require just as much preparation as in-person interviews.

Before your interview:

  • Test your camera and microphone.

  • Make sure your background is clean and professional.

  • Close unnecessary programs and silence notifications.

  • Position your camera at eye level.

  • Look into the camera when speaking rather than watching yourself on the screen.

  • Keep your phone on silent and out of reach.

Technical problems can happen, but testing everything ahead of time reduces the chance of unexpected issues.

Preparing for AI Interviews

Some employers now ask candidates to complete an AI interview before speaking with a recruiter. These interviews often ask you to record video answers to pre-set questions. In most cases, there isn't a person asking follow-up questions.

To prepare:

  • Read each question carefully before answering.

  • Use any practice questions the platform offers.

  • Speak naturally and clearly.

  • Keep your answers organized by describing the situation, what you did, and the result.

  • Maintain eye contact with the camera.

  • Stay positive and avoid rushing.

Remember, AI interview platforms are generally used to help organize and evaluate responses. Your communication skills, confidence, and ability to answer the question clearly still matter.

Practice Common Questions

Be ready to answer questions such as:

  • Tell me about yourself.

  • Why do you want to work here?

  • What interests you about this position?

  • What are your strengths?

  • Tell me about a time you solved a problem.

  • Describe a situation where you worked as part of a team.

  • Why should we hire you?

Most interview questions come directly from the job description. Review the required qualifications and responsibilities, then prepare examples that demonstrate your experience and skills.

Practice your answers out loud. You don't need to memorize them, but you should be comfortable speaking about your experience confidently.

Prepare Questions for the Employer

Interviews are a two-way conversation. Asking questions shows that you're interested in the position.

You might ask:

  • What does a typical day look like?

  • What training is provided?

  • What does success look like in this role?

  • What are the next steps in the hiring process?

First Impressions Still Matter

Whether you're meeting someone in person or appearing on a screen, employers notice your professionalism.

Remember to:

  • Arrive or log in early.

  • Smile and make eye contact.

  • Listen carefully before answering.

  • Speak clearly and honestly.

  • Thank the interviewer for their time.
