Reach for Opportunities, But Build Your Path Wisely

We've all seen job postings that sound exciting. Maybe the pay is better, the work is interesting, or it seems like the next step in your career. It's natural to want to aim higher and challenge yourself.
However, there's a difference between stretching your abilities and applying for positions that are far beyond your current experience or qualifications.
Growth Happens One Step at a Time
Most successful careers are built through a series of smaller steps rather than one giant leap.
For example, if your goal is to become a supervisor, you might first focus on developing leadership skills, mentoring coworkers, or taking on additional responsibilities. If you'd like to work in a skilled trade, you may need to start by gaining entry-level experience, completing training, or obtaining the required certifications.
Each step builds the knowledge, confidence, and experience needed for the next opportunity.
Be Honest About Where You Are Today
Being realistic about your current qualifications isn't limiting yourself—it's creating a plan for success.
Ask yourself:
What qualifications do I already have?
What skills am I missing?
What experience would help me become a stronger candidate?
What can I start working on right now?
Identifying these gaps allows you to create achievable goals rather than becoming discouraged by repeated rejections.
Turn Requirements Into Goals
Instead of viewing job requirements as barriers, think of them as a roadmap.
If a posting requires:
A specific certification
Several years of experience
Supervisory experience
Specialized technical skills
Ask yourself how you can begin working toward those requirements today.
Every certification earned, every new responsibility accepted, and every skill developed brings you closer to your long-term goal.
Don't Sell Yourself Short—But Don't Skip the Process
Confidence is important. You should absolutely apply for positions that challenge you and allow you to grow. At the same time, employers are looking for candidates who can successfully perform the role. Taking the time to build your experience and qualifications increases your chances of finding a position where you can succeed, learn, and continue advancing.
The goal isn't to avoid ambition—it's to pair ambition with preparation.
Focus on Progress, Not Perfection
Career development is a journey. Few people start in their dream job.
Most gain experience, learn new skills, and gradually work their way toward larger opportunities. Rather than focusing on how far away a goal may seem, focus on the next step you can take. Small, consistent progress often leads to big results over time.
